Coal gasification bill moves to next step
Senate OKs measure, but Taylorville plant still a long way from being built

November 20, 2008 Four years after the idea of a coal gasification plant in Taylorville was first floated, Illinois lawmakers Thursday finally approved legislation that may enable the facility to be built.
Also on the last day of the General Assembly’s fall veto session, lawmakers approved bills to require insurance coverage of autism disorders and to help the state’s horse-racing industry.
The Illinois Senate gave final approval to a bill that could lead to construction of the $2.5 billion Taylorville Energy Center in Christian County. The plant will use coal gasification technology to produce up to 550 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 500,000 homes. High-sulfur Illinois coal will be used.
